Bhuvneshwar Kumar Registers Unique IPL Record Ahead Of Bumrah And Malinga

Bhuvneshwar achieves rare IPL milestone surpassing elite fast bowlers.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar etched his name into the Indian Premier League (IPL) record books on Sunday by becoming the first fast bowler to reach 200 wickets in the tournament's history. The milestone came during RCB's clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the veteran seamer dismissed CSK youngster Ayush Mhatre to achieve the feat. Kumar, playing in his 192nd IPL match, joined leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal as only the second bowler overall to hit the 200-wicket mark.

The 36-year-old swing specialist picked up the historic wicket in the early overs with a hard-length delivery outside off that cramped Mhatre on the pull, resulting in a miscued shot caught at mid-off by Rajat Patidar. Kumar finished the match with figures of 3/41 in four overs as RCB defended a imposing total of 250/3 to secure a 43-run victory. His performance underscored his enduring skill, particularly with the new ball and in the powerplay, where he has long been one of the league's most economical operators.

Kumar's journey to this landmark highlights remarkable longevity and adaptability in a format that often favours batters. He began his IPL career in 2011 with the now-defunct Pune Warriors India before enjoying successful stints with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he won the title in 2016 and claimed back-to-back Purple Caps in 2016 and 2017. In 2025, he played a key role in RCB's maiden IPL triumph, contributing 17 wickets, including crucial death-over breakthroughs in the final. Retained by RCB ahead of the 2026 season, he has continued to evolve his game, blending traditional swing with variations suited to modern T20 demands.

Notably, no other prominent fast bowler has matched this milestone. Jasprit Bumrah currently sits on 183 wickets for Mumbai Indians, while legendary Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga retired with 170 scalps. Even West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, a highly effective death bowler, reached only 183 wickets. Kumar's achievement stands out given the challenges faced by pacers in the IPL, where spinners often dominate wicket tallies due to conditions and match situations.

The record adds to Kumar's impressive IPL legacy, which includes the all-time record for most dot balls bowled and consistent performances across franchises. At an age when many pacers slow down, he remains a vital asset for RCB, demonstrating that experience and craft can still triumph in the high-octane league. Fans and experts alike have hailed the moment as a fitting tribute to one of India's most consistent white-ball bowlers.

With the 2026 IPL season still in its early stages, Kumar's milestone not only cements his place among the tournament's greats but also serves as inspiration for emerging fast bowlers. As RCB builds on their recent title success, his leadership with the ball will likely prove instrumental in their campaign.
