Champions League: Havertz Goal Gives Arsenal 1-0 First-Leg Advantage
Havertz scores late to secure Arsenal victory in Lisbon.
Kai Havertz scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory over Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday at the Jose Alvalade Stadium. The Gunners bounced back from recent domestic setbacks, including defeats to Manchester City in the League Cup final and Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals, to claim a crucial away win in Europe. Despite a largely subdued performance, Arsenal relied on David Raya’s exceptional goalkeeping and Havertz’s clinical finish to snatch the late victory.
Arsenal arrived in Lisbon struggling for momentum after consecutive losses, which marked only the fifth defeat of the season for the Premier League leaders. Manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged the team’s lack of rhythm in the opening stages but praised the squad’s resilience in finding a way to win. “We had to be a little bit crisper, faster, and more efficient to break them down when they had that block,” Arteta said, highlighting the tactical challenges posed by Sporting’s disciplined defence.
David Raya emerged as the hero in goal, making several crucial saves to keep Arsenal in contention. A fierce strike from Maxi Araujo was tipped onto the crossbar, while Geny Catamo’s angled shot was smothered by the Spaniard. Arteta lauded Raya’s influence, describing him as “phenomenal and extraordinary since he joined us” and underlining the goalkeeper’s role in Arsenal’s European ambitions.

The game remained cagey for long periods, with Arsenal struggling to create clear-cut chances. Martin Odegaard’s early shot was comfortably saved, while Leandro Trossard and Odegaard both came close after the interval. Sporting, meanwhile, threatened late through a Luis Suarez cross and Catamo header but could not break the deadlock. The match appeared destined for a goalless draw until the final moments, when substitutes made the decisive impact.
In stoppage time, Gabriel Martinelli’s precise pass split Sporting’s defence, allowing Havertz to beat the offside trap and slot home from ten yards. The goal highlighted Arsenal’s ability to capitalise on key moments despite an otherwise underwhelming display. Arteta celebrated the strike, noting the importance of such decisive contributions at this stage of the season. The victory gives Arsenal a narrow advantage heading into the second leg in north London on April 15.
Arsenal now aim to maintain their strong domestic form, sitting nine points clear at the top of the Premier League and on course for their first league title in 22 years. Sporting, who had won 17 consecutive home games before this encounter, will look to overturn the deficit on home soil. Arsenal’s win also serves to counter criticism of the team’s mental toughness, demonstrating their capacity to grind out crucial results under pressure.
