IPL In Australia: Report Claims Private Talks Underway With BCCI

Report claims Cricket Australia seeks reciprocal IPL match after BBL deal.

An Indian Premier League match could be played in Australia in the future, with Cricket Australia reportedly extending an open invitation to the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The possibility comes as Australia prepares to stage the opening match of the 2026-27 Big Bash League season in Chennai, with reports suggesting private discussions over a reciprocal IPL fixture are underway.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Cricket Australia hopes the overseas BBL match can become an annual event and that India could eventually reciprocate by staging an IPL game in Australia. The report said the proposal would depend on the BCCI accepting the invitation, while no official agreement or schedule for an IPL match in Australia has been announced.

The development follows the announcement that Melbourne Renegades will face defending champions Perth Scorchers at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on December 12. The fixture will mark the first time a Big Bash League match is played outside Australia and the first time a foreign cricket league match is staged in India.

The Chennai fixture is a major part of the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The initiative aims to strengthen cooperation in sports training, capacity building, sports science, technology, industry and investment between the two countries.

The announcement also forms the centrepiece of the week-long “G’Day Namaste” festival in India, which will feature Australian cultural, business and sporting events. The broader roadmap includes plans for an India-Australia Youth Sports Festival aimed at increasing interaction between young athletes and strengthening long-term sporting ties between the two nations.

Modi said sport has a unique ability to bring people together and expressed hope that the roadmap would diversify India-Australia sporting cooperation. The initiative comes as both countries prepare for major international events, with India set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and Australia scheduled to stage the Brisbane Olympics in 2032.
