Bruno Fernandes Breaks Silence on Portugal's World Cup Exit
Bruno Fernandes reacts emotionally to Portugal's World Cup elimination by Spain.
Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has expressed his disappointment, frustration and sadness following his country’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Portugal entered the tournament as one of the favourites to challenge for the trophy but were knocked out in the Round of 16 after suffering a 1-0 defeat against reigning European champions Spain.
Fernandes said the quality of Portugal’s squad and the strong bond developed among the players over several years had raised his expectations for the tournament. The Manchester United midfielder thanked his teammates, coaching staff and other members of the national team setup for their commitment throughout the campaign, while also expressing gratitude to Portuguese supporters for their continued belief.
Portugal’s elimination came after a closely contested knockout match in which both teams created opportunities but struggled to convert them. Fernandes and captain Cristiano Ronaldo were among the Portugal players who had chances to score, but Spain’s defence held firm. The match remained goalless until the closing stages as both sides pushed for a decisive breakthrough.

Spain eventually secured victory through a late goal from Mikel Merino, who combined with fellow substitute Ferran Torres before scoring the winner. The result sent Spain into the quarterfinals and ended Portugal’s hopes of winning their first World Cup. Spain also became the first team in tournament history to record six consecutive clean sheets in a single World Cup campaign.
The defeat carried additional significance for Ronaldo, who had announced before the match that the 2026 tournament would be his final World Cup. However, the Portugal captain has not yet indicated whether he plans to continue playing international football after the elimination as he continues his pursuit of 1,000 professional career goals.
Fernandes’ message reflected the disappointment within a Portugal squad that had entered the competition with high expectations. Despite the early knockout-stage exit, he praised the unity developed within the team and thanked everyone involved in the campaign. Attention will now turn to the future of several senior players and Portugal’s preparations for upcoming international competitions.
