Gukesh Faces Sindarov In World Chess Championship Match At Geneva

India’s reigning World Chess Champion D Gukesh will face Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov in the FIDE World Chess Championship Match 2026, which will be held in Geneva from November 25 to December 15, 2026, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced on Tuesday. The contest will mark a historic moment as both players will be 20 years old when the match begins, making it the youngest World Championship match in chess history.

Gukesh earned the world title after defeating China’s Ding Liren in Singapore in 2024, becoming the 18th World Champion and the youngest player ever to win the crown at the age of 18. The Indian grandmaster, who is the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to claim the world title, will now defend his championship against Sindarov, who secured his place by winning the FIDE Challenger Tournament.

The World Championship match will consist of 14 classical games, with the first player to reach 7.5 points being declared the winner. If neither player achieves the required score after all 14 games, the championship will be decided through tiebreaks. The match represents the highest stage of the FIDE World Championship cycle, bringing together the defending champion and the challenger who has earned the right to compete for the title.

FIDE Interim President and former World Champion Viswanathan Anand welcomed the announcement, saying several countries, including India, the United States and Cyprus, had shown interest in hosting the prestigious event. FIDE ultimately selected Geneva as the venue, citing its international character and tradition of bringing together different nations and cultures.

Swiss Chess Federation President André Vögtlin described the decision to host the championship as a significant milestone for Swiss chess. He said the event would provide an opportunity to increase the popularity of chess in Switzerland and encourage more people, especially young players, to engage with the sport.

Sindarov, one of the leading young players from Uzbekistan, earned his championship opportunity after winning the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 in Cyprus. He had earlier added to his growing reputation with victory at the 2025 FIDE World Cup. The upcoming Geneva showdown will feature two of the most prominent players of the new generation competing for the highest honour in world chess.
