IOA Chief PT Usha Praises Three Indian Medallists at Commonwealth Games

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha congratulated India's medal winners after an impressive day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, praising high jumper Sarvesh Kushare and para-shot put athletes Sharmila Dhankar and Shilpa Shyla for their performances in Glasgow. Taking to social media, Usha described the medal-winning efforts as a strong boost to India's campaign and commended the athletes for their determination and commitment. "A spectacular end to last evening for our #TeamIndia. Proud of the athletes & their efforts," she wrote, congratulating Sarvesh on his silver medal, Sharmila on her historic gold and Shilpa on her bronze medal.

Sharmila Dhankar created history by winning the gold medal in the women's Shot Put F57 event with a season-best throw of 9.81 metres. The achievement made her the first Indian para-athlete to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal and ended India's two-decade wait for a para-athletics gold at the Games. Her landmark victory added another significant chapter to India's growing success in para sports on the international stage.

India celebrated another milestone in the same event as Shilpa Shyla secured the bronze medal following a successful post-event protest and review. Officials overturned a valid mark registered by Nigeria's Eucharia Iyiazi, resulting in Shilpa moving into the medal positions. Her personal-best throw of 7.26 metres earned India its first-ever double podium finish in a Commonwealth Games para-athletics event, marking a memorable day for the country's para-athletes.

Earlier in the competition, Sarvesh Kushare added to India's medal tally by claiming the silver medal in the men's high jump. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the medal winners through social media. The Prime Minister also praised Shilpa Shyla for winning bronze with a personal-best effort and commended Sarvesh Kushare for his determination and consistency in securing the silver medal in the men's high jump.
