F1 Returns to Zandvoort With Antonelli Leading, Verstappen Committed to Red Bull

1 resumes at Zandvoort with Antonelli leading and Verstappen's Red Bull extension.

Formula 1 returns from its summer break this weekend with the Dutch Grand Prix, as the championship enters a crucial second half with 12 races still remaining. Mercedes teenager Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers’ standings after an impressive opening half of the season, while Max Verstappen has committed his future to Red Bull until 2030. With Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren all capable of challenging for victories, the return to racing at Zandvoort could provide the first major indication of how the title battle will develop.

Antonelli has emerged as one of the biggest stories of the 2026 season. The 19-year-old has already secured six victories and leads teammate George Russell in the championship. Russell has endured retirements and inconsistent race fortunes while also struggling to match Antonelli’s pace at times. Although his points advantage remains significant, the Mercedes driver faces increasing pressure as he attempts to secure his first world championship. Antonelli, meanwhile, has a historic opportunity to become the youngest Formula 1 world champion if his strong form continues.

Mercedes cannot afford to focus solely on the internal battle, however, as Ferrari and McLaren remain potential threats. Lewis Hamilton has enjoyed a resurgence at Ferrari and is the only non-Mercedes driver to have recorded multiple wins this season. Charles Leclerc has also claimed a victory, leaving Ferrari with a potential dilemma if the championship battle becomes tighter. McLaren, meanwhile, showed its potential through Lando Norris’ dominant victory in Budapest after reliability problems disrupted much of its first half. A more dependable car could make the defending champions a serious threat in the remaining races.

Verstappen’s decision to remain with Red Bull through 2030 has also added another major storyline to the season. The four-time world champion had been linked with possible moves to rival teams amid frustrations over Red Bull’s performance and the sport’s new regulations. His long-term commitment suggests that he remains convinced the team can return to the front. Red Bull’s ability to develop its car during the second half will therefore be closely watched, particularly as Verstappen looks to mount another championship challenge despite his difficult start to the season.

The battle throughout the rest of the field could also become increasingly competitive. Aston Martin has shown signs of improvement with its upgraded car and hopes further progress with Honda’s revised power unit will help it move closer to the midfield. Williams is also looking to build momentum, while Racing Bulls enters the second half with a changed driver line-up. Liam Lawson has moved to Red Bull, while Yuki Tsunoda returns to Racing Bulls alongside Arvid Lindblad. These changes could alter the competitive order as teams continue developing their cars.

The second half of the season also contains several major unknowns, including Formula 1’s first Grand Prix in Madrid and the return of Malaysia’s Sepang circuit. The final races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi could also face uncertainty depending on the geopolitical situation in the region. For now, all attention turns to Zandvoort, where Antonelli will attempt to strengthen his championship lead and Mercedes will look to maintain its advantage. With rival teams closing in and Verstappen determined to remain a factor, the next 12 races could produce a dramatic conclusion to the 2026 Formula 1 season.
