Bangladesh Eye Historic Series Win in Australia, Says Captain Shanto
Bangladesh lead series 1-0, face Australia in final Test decider.
Bangladesh will enter the second and final Test against Australia with a historic series victory within reach after taking a 1-0 lead in the opening match. The visitors stunned the hosts in Darwin earlier this week and now need only a draw in South Mackay to secure their first Test series win on Australian soil. The decisive match is scheduled to begin on Saturday at the Great Barrier Reef Arena, where Bangladesh are expecting significantly more bounce and a tougher challenge.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said his team had anticipated the different conditions and prepared accordingly. Bangladesh’s batters enjoyed the relatively warm and batting-friendly conditions in Darwin, but the surface in South Mackay is expected to offer greater assistance to fast bowlers. Shanto said the team had worked on handling extra bounce during training and believes the batters are equipped to adapt to the conditions.
The Bangladesh captain pointed to the team’s preparations against Zimbabwe as another reason for confidence. He said that series provided the players with exposure to a pitch offering similar bounce, while recent net sessions have focused on the technical skills required to deal with deliveries rising more sharply. With Australia expected to challenge Bangladesh’s batting with pace and bounce, Shanto believes his players can translate their preparation into performance.

Bangladesh’s confidence has been strengthened by their batting display in the first Test. After bowling Australia out for 198, the visitors produced an impressive 426, taking on a bowling attack featuring Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon. Bangladesh then had only 57 runs to chase in the fourth innings after another Australian batting collapse, allowing them to complete a memorable victory and move one step closer to a historic series triumph.
Shanto also described the Australian bowling attack as a major opportunity for Bangladesh’s batters to test themselves. He said performing against a group of high-quality bowlers can provide confidence for future matches, particularly when Bangladesh encounter similar conditions or face elite attacks. The captain’s comments underline the belief within the squad that their success in the opening Test was not simply an isolated result but evidence of their ability to compete at the highest level.
India remain the only South Asian team to have previously won a Test series in Australia, making Bangladesh’s current position particularly significant. A victory or draw in South Mackay would place Bangladesh alongside India as a team from the subcontinent to achieve a series triumph on Australian soil. With Australia seeking to level the series and Bangladesh aiming to complete a landmark achievement, the second Test carries major significance for both teams.
