Atletico Madrid Boost Attack with Arrival of Goal-Scoring Star Ademola Lookman

Atletico Madrid agrees to sign Ademola Lookman from Atalanta for around €40m.

Atletico Madrid announced on Sunday that they have reached an agreement with Italian Serie A club Atalanta to sign 28-year-old Nigerian international winger Ademola Lookman. The transfer, reported to be worth around €40 million ($47.5 million), is pending a medical examination and the signing of the contract, Atletico confirmed in a club statement.

Lookman, who is already in Madrid, enjoyed a standout moment in European football when he scored a hat-trick for Atalanta against Bayer Leverkusen in the 2024 Europa League final, helping the Italian side lift the trophy. This season, the winger has netted three goals in 19 appearances across all competitions for Atalanta.

Born in London, Lookman began his professional career with Charlton Athletic before moving to Everton. He had a loan spell at RB Leipzig which later became a permanent move in 2019. Subsequent loan stints at Fulham and Leicester City in the Premier League preceded his transfer to Atalanta in 2022, where he has been a key attacking asset.

Atletico Madrid, under coach Diego Simeone, has been actively seeking reinforcements in attack after Giacomo Raspadori’s departure to Atalanta and Conor Gallagher’s winter move to Tottenham Hotspur. The team has also struggled in front of goal, with striker Julian Alvarez enduring a scoring drought in La Liga, having failed to score in his last 11 appearances.

Lookman’s arrival is expected to provide additional creativity and goal-scoring options for Atletico as they continue to chase domestic and European ambitions. The club’s management is hopeful that the Nigerian international can revive their attacking form and add depth to the squad for the remainder of the season.

The transfer is one of the high-profile winter signings in European football, reflecting Atletico Madrid’s continued investment in strengthening their squad amid challenging competition in La Liga and the Champions League.
