Yashasvi Jaiswal Reflects On Captaincy Debut In IPL 2026 With Simple Statement

Yashasvi Jaiswal reacts calmly after his first IPL 2026 match as captain.

Rajasthan Royals stand-in captain Yashasvi Jaiswal backed his bowling unit and refused to single out individuals after the team suffered a heavy 77-run defeat against Gujarat Titans in their IPL 2026 clash at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Saturday. The loss came after Gujarat posted a dominant 229/4, powered by a strong batting display from Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan.

Rajasthan struggled to contain Gujarat’s top order, with Gill and Sudharsan putting on a commanding opening partnership that set the tone for a high total. Despite efforts from the home side’s bowlers, including England pacer Jofra Archer, the attack failed to consistently build pressure on a batting-friendly pitch in Jaipur.

Speaking after the match, Jaiswal admitted that Rajasthan found it difficult to restrict boundaries once Gujarat’s openers settled in. He said the team’s focus was on maintaining disciplined lines and lengths, but acknowledged that the opposition batters executed their plans more effectively throughout the innings.

Jaiswal strongly defended Archer, who had an off day with the ball and went wicketless while conceding runs. He said such performances are part of the game and highlighted Archer’s previous contributions to the team, insisting that the pacer would bounce back strongly in the upcoming matches.

The captain also addressed selection decisions, including the omission of left-arm pacer Nandre Burger, saying the team management focused on powerplay combinations rather than overthinking individual choices. He added that his approach remained simple, prioritising bowlers who could deliver effective spells in the early overs.

Despite the defeat, Rajasthan briefly showed promise during their chase, with young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scoring a quick 36 off 16 balls and Dhruv Jurel adding an explosive cameo. However, the innings collapsed after a strong spell of spin bowling led by Rashid Khan, leaving Rajasthan all out for 152.

Jaiswal said the team would not dwell on the result and instead focus on learning from their mistakes ahead of the next match. The defeat impacted Rajasthan’s net run rate significantly, while Gujarat strengthened their position in the points table with a comprehensive all-round performance.
