GT Openers Shubman Gill And Sai Sudharsan Register Historic IPL 2026 First vs RR
Gill and Sudharsan achieve historic IPL 2026 batting feat.
Gujarat Titans openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan created IPL history during their side’s clash against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday, becoming the first-ever all-Indian batting pair to score more than 2,500 runs together in the tournament. The milestone came as Gujarat Titans posted a commanding 229/4 in their IPL 2026 encounter at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
Gill and Sudharsan stitched together a dominant 118-run opening stand that laid the foundation for Gujarat’s imposing total. Sudharsan scored 55 off 36 deliveries, striking six boundaries and two sixes, while Gill produced an explosive 84 off 44 balls. The pair now rank third overall among the highest-scoring partnerships in IPL history, behind only Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, as well as Kohli and Chris Gayle.
Speaking after the innings, Sudharsan said Gujarat Titans entered the match with a clear plan to attack aggressively during the powerplay, particularly against Rajasthan’s pace attack led by Jofra Archer. Gujarat raced to 82 without loss in the first six overs, equalling the franchise’s highest-ever IPL powerplay score.

Sudharsan said the batting conditions were excellent initially before the surface slowed down later in the innings. According to him, the ball began gripping and turning once it became older, making strokeplay more difficult against slower deliveries and spin bowling. He added that Gujarat’s bowlers could look to exploit similar conditions during Rajasthan’s chase by relying on cutters and variations.
The left-handed opener also credited his strong understanding with captain Gill for the consistency of their partnership. Sudharsan said the pair communicated freely in the middle and maintained an attacking approach throughout the innings without hesitation. He added that discussions with Gill during partnerships often helped validate his decision-making and improved his confidence while batting.
After the dismissal of the opening pair, late contributions from Washington Sundar and Rahul Tewatia ensured Gujarat Titans finished strongly with 229/4. The total left Rajasthan Royals facing a daunting chase in one of the highest-scoring matches of the IPL 2026 season.
