Ruturaj Gaikwad Acknowledges CSK's Death-Over Vulnerability After SRH Loss in IPL 2026
CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad laments middle-order collapse after ten-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has pointed to a middle-order slowdown as the key factor behind his team’s defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026. Reflecting on the loss, Gaikwad said that chasing steep targets in the final overs becomes extremely difficult when momentum is lost in the middle phase of the innings.
Chasing a target of 195, Chennai Super Kings were well placed at 111 for 3 after ten overs, appearing to be in control of the run chase. However, the innings lost direction soon after, as the team struggled to maintain the required scoring rate during the middle overs, ultimately falling short of the target.
Gaikwad highlighted that the team managed to score only four runs in the two overs immediately after the halfway mark, which significantly increased the pressure during the closing stages. He noted that once the required rate rises to 12–13 runs per over in the death overs, it becomes a challenging task even for experienced batting line-ups.

The defeat marked a setback for Chennai Super Kings, who had shown signs of recovery after a difficult start to the season. The team had initially suffered three consecutive losses before bouncing back with victories against the Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders, raising hopes of a turnaround in their campaign.
Despite the improved performances in recent matches, the loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad exposed inconsistencies in the team’s batting, particularly in the middle overs. The inability to capitalise on a strong start ultimately proved costly, as the team finished at 184 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs, losing the match by ten runs.
Gaikwad’s remarks underline the importance of maintaining momentum throughout the innings in T20 cricket, especially during chases of high totals. As the tournament progresses, Chennai Super Kings will be looking to address these issues and improve their middle-order performance to stay competitive in the league.
