R Ashwin Responds to Claims of Revealing CSK Targets During IPL 2026 Auction
Ashwin dismisses allegations that his social media analysis influenced CSK’s IPL 2026 auction strategy.
Retired Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has responded wittily to a fan's accusation that he leaked Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) targets during the IPL 2026 mini-auction, potentially driving up prices for uncapped players Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma. Ashwin had posted predictions on social media shortly before CSK secured both players, leading the fan to share screenshots claiming the timing hampered the franchise's strategy. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) also bid aggressively for the duo but lost out as CSK paid a record Rs 14.20 crore each.
The incident unfolded during the auction when Ashwin, a former CSK player known for his insightful commentary post-retirement from international and IPL cricket, forecasted that the five-time champions would target the young talents. Prashant Veer, a 20-year-old left-arm spinning all-rounder from Uttar Pradesh, and Kartik Sharma, a 19-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Rajasthan, became the joint-most expensive uncapped players in IPL history. Intense bidding wars involving multiple franchises, including SRH, escalated their prices significantly.
In response to the fan's claim, Ashwin took a sarcastic dig, stating that SRH—referred to as the "Orange Army"—had legendary spinners like Muttiah Muralitharan and Daniel Vettori, along with analysts and scouts, at their table yet apparently relied on his tweets for bidding decisions. His reply highlighted the absurdity of the accusation, noting the professional resources available to franchises. Ashwin further dismissed related trolls with humour, questioning how such claims gained traction.

Prashant Veer impressed in domestic T20s with a strike rate over 170 and economical bowling, while Kartik Sharma showcased finishing abilities with a high strike rate and multiple fifties. CSK's heavy investment reflects a shift toward youth, filling gaps left by trades and retirements, though some fans debated the impact on pursuing other targets like overseas all-rounders.
The episode underscores the heightened scrutiny on social media during auctions, where predictions from influential figures like Ashwin can spark debates. Franchises, however, rely on extensive scouting rather than public posts, as evidenced by the multi-team interest in the players. Ashwin continues to engage fans with his analysis across platforms post his playing career.
