IPL Auction 2026: CSK “Missed a Trick,” Says R Ashwin on Cameron Green Call
R. Ashwin questioned CSK’s auction call after Cameron Green became IPL’s most expensive overseas signing.
Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has opined that Chennai Super Kings "missed a trick" by not securing Australian all-rounder Cameron Green in the IPL 2026 mini-auction held on December 16, 2025. Green was eventually acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders for a record ₹25.20 crore, making him the most expensive overseas player in IPL history.
In a post-auction analysis on his YouTube channel, Ashwin stated, "Personally, I felt Cameron Green would have been a terrific addition to CSK, and in that sense, they may have missed a small trick." He emphasised that the decision was not about the price, calling Green a "generational talent" and a "brilliant acquisition" for KKR.
The bidding war saw intense competition between KKR and CSK, with the five-time champions pulling out once the price crossed ₹25 crore. Ashwin suggested KKR's aggressive early bids may have deterred CSK, noting that a more patient approach could have altered the outcome.

Green, 26, brings explosive middle-order batting, seam bowling, and exceptional fielding—qualities Ashwin believed would have perfectly suited CSK's setup. The all-rounder previously played for Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Instead, CSK focused on uncapped domestic prospects, spending ₹14.20 crore each on Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma—the highest for uncapped Indians—reflecting a long-term youth investment strategy. Ashwin's remarks highlight contrasting team-building philosophies, with KKR prioritising proven overseas stars and CSK backing emerging talent as they prepare for the 2026 season.
