R Ashwin Comments On CSK Leadership Under Ruturaj Gaikwad In IPL 2026

R Ashwin comments on Ruturaj Gaikwad’s CSK captaincy in IPL 2026 discussion.

Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has offered a strong endorsement of Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, stating that leadership in the Indian Premier League comes with significant pressure, particularly during periods of transition for established franchises.Ashwin highlighted that Chennai Super Kings are currently navigating a rebuilding phase following the conclusion of the MS Dhoni captaincy era, with Gaikwad having taken over leadership duties in 2024.

He stressed that the expectations placed on the franchise remain exceptionally high due to its long-standing success, but urged stakeholders and fans to allow time for the new leadership structure to settle.According to Ashwin, the dual responsibility of batting and captaincy in T20 cricket can have a tangible impact on performance. He noted that the mental and tactical load of leading a side like CSK often affects a player’s natural rhythm, particularly when results are not consistently going in the team’s favour.

His remarks come amid growing scrutiny of Gaikwad’s recent form.Chennai Super Kings recently suffered a five-wicket defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad, a result that has significantly weakened their playoff chances. With only one league match remaining, the team now faces a difficult qualification scenario and must depend on other results to remain in contention for the knockout stage.

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch also weighed in on the situation, urging restraint in judging Gaikwad’s captaincy in isolation. He noted that T20 cricket is inherently volatile and that leadership pressure can temporarily affect batting output, even for established performers. Finch emphasised that Gaikwad’s tactical decisions have largely been composed and effective despite inconsistent results.

Beyond CSK’s campaign, Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling coach Varun Aaron praised the contributions of young pacers Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain, highlighting their work ethic and preparation leading into the IPL season. He also lauded Heinrich Klaasen’s consistent performances, noting his ability to adapt between strike rotation and aggressive acceleration as a key factor in SRH’s strong middle-order stability.
