R Ashwin Criticises Punjab Kings’ Call That Could Impact IPL 2026 Campaign
R Ashwin criticises Punjab Kings decision in IPL 2026.
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has criticised the Punjab Kings (PBKS) management and the Indian Premier League (IPL) structure over what he described as an “unfair” home venue arrangement, arguing that inconsistent scheduling and multiple home bases can negatively impact team performance and tournament outcomes.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin expressed frustration over Punjab Kings’ decision to split their home matches between venues, contrasting it with the stability enjoyed by traditionally successful IPL franchises. He suggested that established teams such as Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) benefit from playing at a single, consistent home ground throughout the season.
Ashwin highlighted historical success patterns in the IPL, noting that the most successful franchises have largely maintained continuity in their home venues. “KKR, CSK, and MI, the three teams that have won the highest number of trophies… have they ever changed their home venue?” he said, questioning whether venue stability plays a role in long-term success.

He further argued that Punjab Kings’ recent performance dip could be linked to their scheduling and venue changes. The franchise had started the season strongly, winning seven consecutive matches, but subsequently lost five matches in a row. Two of those defeats reportedly came at their secondary home ground in Dharamsala, which Ashwin pointed to while discussing the challenges of shifting conditions mid-season.
“It is wrong,” Ashwin said, stressing that teams require consistency to build momentum. He added that Punjab had won several matches in Mohali before switching venues, after which their campaign reportedly lost direction. His comments reflect broader concerns about competitive balance and the impact of logistical decisions on team performance in franchise cricket.
The former India spinner, who has played for multiple IPL franchises including Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings, suggested that familiarity with conditions, pitch behaviour, and local support can significantly influence results. He implied that rotating home venues disrupts this advantage, making it harder for teams to maintain rhythm across a long tournament.Ashwin’s remarks have added to ongoing discussions around IPL scheduling and franchise management practices, particularly regarding whether all teams should be given equal structural advantages in terms of home conditions.
