Punjab Kings Lose Sixth Consecutive Match; R Ashwin Criticizes Franchise's Venue Strategy

The Punjab Kings suffer their sixth consecutive loss; coach Ricky Ponting's isolated bench moment sparks playoff elimination fears.

Ricky Ponting was left visibly dejected after the Punjab Kings suffered their sixth consecutive defeat in the Indian Premier League 2026 season, pushing the team to the brink of elimination from the playoff race. Punjab Kings’ latest setback came against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Dharamshala, with television visuals showing Ponting sitting alone in the dugout after the match, reflecting on a dramatic collapse in the second half of the campaign.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin reacted emotionally to the visuals during an episode of his YouTube show “Ash Ki Baat," describing the scene as a “powerful picture." Ashwin said Ponting appeared burdened by the franchise’s sudden decline after occupying a strong position earlier in the tournament. Punjab Kings were once considered favorites for a top-two finish but now require favorable results from other teams to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Ashwin, who previously represented Punjab Kings, said he sympathized with both Ponting and captain Shreyas Iyer while also criticizing the franchise’s planning decisions during the season. He argued that the team’s use of multiple home venues had disrupted momentum and affected player familiarity with conditions. The Punjab Kings played matches at both Mullanpur and Dharamshala during the campaign, a move Ashwin suggested created unnecessary challenges for a squad already struggling for consistency.

According to Ashwin, the difference in playing conditions between the two venues significantly impacted the team’s performances. He pointed out that while Punjab Kings had adapted well to the surfaces in Mullanpur and even defended a score of 220 against Sunrisers Hyderabad there, the transition to Dharamshala proved difficult for both domestic and overseas players. Ashwin said factors such as altitude, bounce, and pace variations made it difficult for players to settle into a rhythm despite the soil type being similar.

The veteran spinner also questioned whether commercial considerations had been prioritized over cricketing requirements. Ashwin stated that franchises aiming for titles cannot afford to compromise on consistency in home conditions, especially in a tournament as competitive as the IPL. He suggested that even one victory from the three home defeats in Dharamshala could have dramatically changed Punjab Kings’ playoff position and morale heading into the final stage of the season.

Punjab Kings now face Lucknow Super Giants in their final league match at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, a venue widely regarded as challenging for batters. The team’s playoff qualification chances remain uncertain and largely dependent on results elsewhere in the competition. With pressure mounting and their losing streak continuing, Punjab Kings face an uphill battle to keep their IPL 2026 campaign alive.
