Neymar's World Cup Bid in Jeopardy as Santos Suffer Embarrassing 3-0 Loss

Neymar was mistakenly substituted during Santos's 3-0 loss on the eve of Brazil's World Cup squad announcement.

Brazilian football star Neymar was left furious after a refereeing error forced him off the pitch during Santos’ 3-0 defeat to Coritiba in a Brazilian Serie A clash on Sunday. The incident unfolded in the second half when Neymar was mistakenly substituted while receiving treatment near the sidelines, sparking heated protests from the veteran forward. The controversial moment came at a crucial stage of the season as Santos continued to struggle near the relegation zone.

The confusion began in the 65th minute when the fourth official raised the substitution board showing Neymar’s number 10 jersey. At the time, the 34-year-old forward was on the opposite side of the field receiving medical attention and failed to notice the signal. Santos had already prepared teenage substitute Robinho Jr., son of former Brazil striker Robinho, to enter the field as play briefly paused during the stoppage.

By the time Neymar attempted to return to the pitch, the match had already restarted with Robinho Jr. officially on the field. Match officials informed Neymar that he could no longer continue, prompting an angry confrontation with the referee. Television footage showed Neymar visibly frustrated as he demanded clarification over the unexpected substitution decision and argued with officials on the touchline.

According to reports, Santos manager Cuca had intended to substitute defender Gonzalo Escobar, who wears the number 31 jersey, rather than Neymar. The handwritten substitution slip reportedly contained Escobar’s number, but the confusion was not corrected before play resumed. Neymar insisted on seeing the substitution note himself and protested the handling of the incident, though the officials allowed the substitution to stand under match regulations.

The defeat further deepened Santos’ problems in the Brazilian top flight, with the club slipping into the Serie A relegation places after the loss. Neymar’s return to Brazilian football had initially raised hopes of a revival for Santos, but injuries and inconsistent performances have limited his impact this season. The former Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona star has played only half of Santos’ league matches so far after recovering from knee surgery.

The match also carried added significance for Neymar ahead of Brazil’s upcoming national team announcement by Carlo Ancelotti. Brazil’s all-time leading international scorer is seeking a return to the national squad after a lengthy injury absence. Despite limited appearances, Neymar has managed four goals this season but has also attracted disciplinary concerns, collecting five yellow cards during the campaign.
