MS Dhoni Resumes Net Practice: Will the CSK Legend Play in IPL 2026?
MS Dhoni returns to CSK nets ahead of IPL 2026
Chennai Super Kings have received a major boost ahead of the business end of IPL 2026, with former captain MS Dhoni returning to training after a prolonged spell on the sidelines due to a recurring calf injury. Dhoni, who has missed the entire season so far, has resumed net sessions, sparking hopes of a potential late return as CSK push for a playoff spot.
Dhoni initially suffered a calf strain during the pre-season camp, which ruled him out for two weeks. However, his recovery was later delayed after he aggravated the injury again, forcing him into an extended rehabilitation period. Despite being unavailable for matches, he has remained closely involved with the franchise, participating in practice sessions throughout the season.
A video shared by Chennai Super Kings from the training ground showed Dhoni actively involved in net practice, including bowling sessions. In the clip, the 43-year-old can be heard saying, “Wicket chahiye humko,” reflecting his competitive mindset and enthusiasm despite his injury layoff. The statement quickly went viral among fans, adding to speculation about his possible return.

Dhoni, who is CSK’s most successful captain with five IPL titles, has not featured in a single match in the ongoing season, marking one of the longest absences of his IPL career. Bowling coach Eric Simmons earlier confirmed that Dhoni’s return timeline remains uncertain, stating that his availability will depend entirely on his fitness progress. He also noted that Dhoni is “improving” but will return only when fully ready.
The veteran wicketkeeper-batter was retained by CSK as an uncapped player for ₹4 crore ahead of IPL 2025, a move that was continued into the 2026 season at the same salary. In IPL 2025, Dhoni contributed 196 runs from 14 matches at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 135.17, underlining his continued utility as a lower-order finisher.
Despite his absence, CSK have managed to stay in contention for a playoff berth and currently sit mid-table after recovering from a slow start to the season. The team endured three consecutive defeats early on but has since steadied its campaign with improved performances. Batting coach Michael Hussey previously suggested that Dhoni deliberately stayed away from matchdays to avoid becoming a “distraction,” noting that his presence often draws significant crowd and media attention. As CSK continue their push for qualification, Dhoni’s return to training has reignited optimism among fans, though his actual comeback to competitive action remains uncertain.
