MS Dhoni Won’t Return As Impact Player, Will Keep Wickets: Michael Hussey
Dhoni to resume wicketkeeping role upon return, coach confirms.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting coach Michael Hussey has clarified that MS Dhoni will resume his role as wicketkeeper once he returns from injury, putting to rest speculation about a possible change in duties. Dhoni has missed seven consecutive matches in IPL 2026 due to a calf strain, including CSK’s recent clash against the Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium.
There had been growing discussion over whether Dhoni might return solely as a specialist batter under the Impact Player rule, especially with wicketkeeping options like Sanju Samson available. However, Hussey dismissed such suggestions, stating that Dhoni’s primary role behind the stumps remains unchanged. He emphasised that the only concern is ensuring Dhoni’s physical readiness, particularly his ability to run between the wickets.
Hussey explained that Dhoni’s recovery is progressing well but highlighted that match fitness, especially for quick running during late innings, remains a key factor. He noted that while Dhoni continues to perform strongly with both bat and gloves in training, the team is being cautious to ensure he returns only when fully fit. The focus, he said, is on regaining complete confidence in his calf.

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad also acknowledged Dhoni’s absence, noting the impact it has had both on the team and the crowd atmosphere. Despite missing several games, Dhoni has resumed wicketkeeping practice in the nets, marking a positive step in his recovery, though he has yet to be included in the playing XI.
Hussey added that Dhoni is eager to return and is pushing hard in his rehabilitation process. While there is optimism about his comeback in the coming matches, the team management remains focused on ensuring he is close to full fitness before rejoining competitive action. Fans continue to await his return, given his importance to the franchise. CSK are scheduled to face the Gujarat Titans in their next match in Chennai, where there is hope that Dhoni could make a comeback if deemed fit. Until then, the team is expected to continue managing its lineup carefully while monitoring the progress of its veteran wicketkeeper-batter.
