LeBron James, Lakers Crumble Again As Thunder Punish Second-Half Errors

Lakers suffered another second-half collapse against Thunder during NBA playoffs.

The Los Angeles Lakers created unwanted NBA playoff history after suffering another heavy second-half collapse against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals. The Thunder now hold a commanding 3-0 lead in the series after cruising to a 131-108 victory in Game 3, leaving the Lakers on the brink of elimination.

According to OptaSTATS, the Lakers became the first team in NBA playoff history to lead at halftime in consecutive postseason games and still lose both contests by a combined margin of more than 40 points. The statistic underlined a growing problem for Los Angeles, which has repeatedly failed to maintain momentum after the break despite remaining competitive during the opening halves of games.

In Game 3, the Lakers entered halftime with a narrow 59-57 advantage before Oklahoma City dominated the second half. A similar pattern unfolded in the previous game, where Los Angeles led 58-57 at halftime before eventually losing 125-107. The repeated collapses have intensified scrutiny on the Lakers’ defensive structure, depth and ability to respond to Oklahoma City’s pace and pressure.

The Thunder, led by MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, have emerged as one of the strongest teams in the postseason. Oklahoma City has consistently overwhelmed opponents with aggressive defence, fast transition play and sustained offensive intensity after halftime. The franchise, which finished the regular season with an NBA-best 64 wins, remains unbeaten in the playoffs and is winning games by an average margin of 18.3 points.

Attention has now shifted to the future of the Lakers and veteran superstar LeBron James, whose team faces mounting pressure ahead of a potential elimination game. Questions surrounding the roster composition, defensive consistency and long-term support around James have grown louder as the series has slipped further out of reach.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma City appears increasingly likely to secure a return to the Western Conference Finals for the second consecutive season. The Thunder’s combination of youth, speed and confidence on both ends of the court has strengthened belief that the team could emerge as a serious contender for the NBA championship this year.
