IPL 2026 Points Table Shows Clear Divide Between Top And Bottom Teams Early

IPL 2026 sees early split between top contenders and struggling teams in playoff race.

The 2026 Indian Premier League season has taken an unusually early shape, with the points table splitting sharply into clear performers and underperformers, reducing the familiar mid-table congestion that typically keeps playoff hopes alive deep into the league stage.

Kolkata: Every IPL season usually builds tension through a tightly packed middle order in the standings, where several teams remain in contention until the final week. This year, however, the competition has appeared more decisive much earlier, with a clear gap emerging between the top four and the rest of the field.

Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals have established themselves as the leading group, sitting comfortably ahead in the standings. Punjab Kings are close to the traditionally safe 14–16 point mark for playoff qualification, while RCB, SRH and RR are clustered around 12 points, suggesting a strong early separation from the chasing pack.

Gujarat Titans have become the fifth team to reach double-digit points, but the broader picture shows a widening gap. Several other franchises remain stuck in single digits and are already trailing by four or more points, a situation that is unusual at this stage of a tournament that typically remains tightly contested.

Historically, IPL seasons have taken longer to produce such a divide. In previous editions, including 2023 and 2025, multiple teams stayed bunched together around the 10–12 point range well into the league phase. This season, however, the spread has occurred earlier, with fewer teams left in direct contention for playoff spots.

One of the key factors behind this imbalance has been the simultaneous underperformance of traditionally strong teams such as Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants, while others like RCB, Punjab Kings, RR and SRH have surged ahead with aggressive, high-risk T20 strategies.

Net run rate has further amplified the divide, with top teams posting strong positive figures that cushion occasional losses, while struggling sides face deeper setbacks after heavy defeats. This has made recovery significantly harder for teams already lagging behind, contributing to a points table that appears to be settling earlier than usual and reducing the intensity of the mid-table playoff race.
