IPL 2026: CSK Coach Fleming Admits Bowling Gaps After Punjab Kings Win at Chepauk

CSK lost despite posting 209 runs, exposing serious bowling vulnerabilities.

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has questioned the relevance of designated finishers in modern T20 cricket, stating that the concept is becoming outdated as teams increasingly rely on collective batting contributions. His remarks came after Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a defeat despite posting a formidable total of 209/5 in their IPL 2026 clash at Chepauk.

Reflecting on the loss, Fleming admitted that CSK fell short with the ball while defending a strong total, highlighting the need for a more disciplined and defensive approach in high-scoring games. He noted that even big scores are no longer safe in the evolving T20 format, where aggressive batting and deep line-ups have shifted the balance in favour of chasing teams.

The match saw Punjab Kings mount a successful chase, powered by an explosive start from Priyansh Arya, who scored 39 runs off just 11 deliveries. The momentum was further sustained by a composed half-century from Shreyas Iyer, whose 50 off 29 balls guided his side to their fourth consecutive win over CSK at the venue in recent seasons.

For CSK, the defeat exposed key weaknesses in their bowling department, particularly in the absence of frontline pacers. Injuries and squad decisions have left the team short of impactful options, with players like Matheesha Pathirana unavailable and Nathan Ellis sidelined, affecting their ability to contain opposition batters in crucial phases of the game.

Questions have also been raised about CSK’s strategy during the mini-auctions, where the franchise had one of the largest purses but opted not to invest heavily in experienced bowlers. Despite several proven international pacers being available, the team chose to focus on young uncapped Indian talent, a decision that has drawn scrutiny following their recent struggles on the field.

Fleming’s comments underline a broader shift in T20 cricket, where rigid roles such as “finishers” are giving way to more flexible batting strategies. As teams adapt to the demands of high-scoring contests, CSK may need to reassess both their squad composition and tactical approach to remain competitive in the ongoing IPL 2026 season.
