RCB's Dinesh Karthik Reveals Why The Best Coaching Advice is Often Saying Less

Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, who has transitioned into a mentorship and batting coaching role at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), recently opened up about his approach behind the scenes, highlighting a philosophy that blends understanding, observation, and trust. Speaking about his role, Karthik emphasised that coaching at the elite level is not about micromanaging but about providing targeted guidance, understanding each player’s needs, and preparing them for specific match scenarios. His insights come after RCB made headlines in the 2026 IPL by achieving the fastest 200-plus chase in league history, defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in just 15.4 overs.

Karthik explained that RCB’s squad comprises players at very different stages of their careers, each facing unique challenges. “For someone like Phil Salt, the new ball swinging is a big factor, whereas for Romario Shepherd, swing is rarely a challenge at that stage. My job is to help them navigate these scenarios, position themselves correctly, and then give feedback based on observations,” Karthik said. He stressed that coaching involves as much understanding the individual as it does improving technical skills, reflecting his belief in a player-centric approach.

Drawing from his extensive playing career and experience as a cricket broadcaster, Karthik pointed out the value of clarity, brevity, and trust in helping players make informed decisions under pressure. “These are elite players dominating world cricket; you don’t need to overcoach. The key is giving the right inputs and trusting them to execute. My broadcasting experience taught me to break down games, analyse strategies, and communicate effectively—skills that directly help in mentoring,” he added.

In practical terms, Karthik’s approach involves tailoring preparation to each player. For instance, batsman Tim David receives scenario-specific training to anticipate how bowlers may attack him. Karthik and his team focus on understanding the player’s strengths, designing drills to improve execution of certain shots, and simulating real match conditions. This has helped RCB’s batsmen develop adaptability and consistency across different phases of the game, contributing to their record-breaking performances.

RCB’s coaching philosophy, under Karthik’s guidance, blends experience, observation, and situational analysis. The focus on personalised mentorship ensures that players can respond dynamically during matches, building confidence and decision-making skills. Karthik’s insights underscore the importance of a supportive and analytical coaching environment, showing that success in modern cricket relies as much on preparation and mindset as on raw talent and skill.
