AB De Villiers Explains Why Rishabh Pant's Return to Delhi Capitals Was Inevitable
Pant's move back to Delhi sparks major IPL discussions.
Legendary South African cricketer AB De Villiers has said he was not surprised by Rishabh Pant's return to Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2027 season, suggesting the India wicketkeeper-batter's frustration during his stint with Lucknow Super Giants had become evident. Pant stepped down as Lucknow's captain following the 2026 campaign before completing a trade back to Delhi Capitals in exchange for spinner Kuldeep Yadav. The move also saw Pant accept a significant reduction in salary, dropping from the Rs 27 crore he earned at Lucknow to Rs 15 crore at Delhi.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, De Villiers said Pant's post-match interactions during the previous IPL season hinted that he was unhappy with the situation at Lucknow. "No surprises there after the season they've had and looking at some of his post-match interviews, there were already signs of him being frustrated. So he is returning back to DC," the former Royal Challengers Bengaluru star said. His comments have added to the discussion surrounding one of the biggest player movements ahead of the 2027 IPL season.
Delhi Capitals are themselves entering a new phase with major structural changes expected off the field. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is set to take over as the franchise's Director of Cricket, while former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh is reportedly expected to join the coaching staff as batting coach. These appointments are part of a wider administrative reshuffle after co-owner JSW assumed operational control of the franchise for the next two years under its agreement with the GMR Group.

Despite welcoming Pant's return, De Villiers questioned whether frequent changes in ownership and support staff would benefit the franchise in the long run. He said constant changes in leadership and coaching personnel can make it difficult for players to settle into a stable environment. According to De Villiers, uncertainty around management often creates confusion within the squad and can affect players' confidence and overall performance during a demanding tournament like the IPL.
The former South Africa captain also commented on the wider IPL transfer market, which continues to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 season. Reports suggest Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya could be on the move, with Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals emerging as potential destinations. According to reports, KKR has already held multiple rounds of discussions with Mumbai Indians over a possible trade involving the India all-rounder.
Pandya's second spell with Mumbai Indians has produced mixed results, with the franchise reaching the playoffs only once under his captaincy. Reports also indicate that Kolkata Knight Riders had initially approached Mumbai Indians towards the end of the previous season, although negotiations were delayed. With several high-profile names involved in potential transfers and coaching changes, the build-up to IPL 2027 is already shaping up to be one of the busiest off-seasons in the tournament's history.
