Yashasvi Jaiswal Faces ICC Sanction After Colombo Clash; Asitha Fernando Penalised Too

India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for his heated on-field exchange with Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando during the opening day of the second Test in Colombo. The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that both players were sanctioned for breaching Level 1 of its Code of Conduct following the incident. The disciplinary action followed a tense confrontation between Jaiswal and Fernando during the first day of the Test.

The two players were involved in an exchange on the field, with the incident drawing attention during India's innings. Jaiswal's conduct was subsequently reviewed under the ICC's disciplinary framework, resulting in the fine and demerit point imposed on the India batter. According to the ICC, Jaiswal was found to have breached Level 1 of the Code of Conduct. A 25 per cent deduction from his match fee was imposed along with one demerit point. Level 1 breaches cover relatively minor offences under the ICC's code, but repeated accumulation of demerit points can lead to more serious disciplinary consequences for players.

Fernando was also sanctioned for his role in the confrontation. The Sri Lankan fast bowler was similarly found to have breached Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The action against both players reflects the governing body's decision to treat the on-field exchange as a disciplinary matter rather than allowing the incident to pass without punishment. The clash occurred during a closely contested Test match, where emotions can rise as players compete over extended periods. On-field verbal exchanges and confrontations between batters and bowlers are not uncommon in international cricket, but the ICC Code of Conduct requires players to maintain appropriate standards of behaviour.
