Will Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Miss India A’s South Africa Series?

Kohli and Sharma are likely to skip India A’s South Africa series, focusing on rest and workload management.

Veteran Indian cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are unlikely to feature in the upcoming three-match white-ball series between India A and South Africa A, according to reports from Cricbuzz and other sources. The series, comprising unofficial One-Day Internationals, is set to unfold at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on November 13, 16, and 19, all under lights as day-night fixtures. This development comes despite earlier speculation that the duo, who have retired from Test and T20I cricket and now focus solely on ODIs, might use the opportunity to gain additional match practice ahead of India's senior team engagements. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, are expected to announce the India A squad soon, potentially alongside the lineup for the two-Test series against South Africa.

The decision stems from the pair's strong showings in the recently concluded ODI series against Australia, where they marked their return to limited-overs international cricket after a brief hiatus. Rohit, the series' Player of the Match, rebounded from an initial low of 8 in the opener to smash 73 and an unbeaten 121 in the subsequent games, helping India avoid a clean sweep despite an overall 2-1 defeat. Kohli, enduring ducks in the first two outings, silenced critics with a composed 74 not out in the finale at Sydney, showcasing his trademark resilience. These performances have evidently convinced the selectors that further tune-up games are unnecessary, allowing Rohit and Kohli to conserve energy for higher-stakes assignments. Had their form dipped more severely Down Under, the narrative around their inclusion in the 'A' series might have shifted.

This 'A' tour forms part of South Africa's broader shadow engagement in India, which includes an ongoing two-match red-ball series against India A at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Under wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant's leadership, India A secured a victory in the opener that concluded on November 2, with the decider slated to begin on November 6. The white-ball leg in Rajkot aligns with the BCCI's strategy to blood emerging talents, potentially featuring players like Shreyas Iyer as captain and all-rounder Hardik Pandya for match fitness post-injury, alongside young guns such as Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma. Notably, neither Rohit nor Kohli participated in a similar India A assignment against Australia A last month, underscoring a deliberate approach to their workload management in an era of packed calendars.

Looking ahead, Rohit and Kohli's next competitive outing will be the senior team's three-match ODI series against South Africa, kicking off on November 30 in Ranchi, followed by games in Raipur and Visakhapatnam. This precedes a brief ODI rubber against New Zealand in January 2026, marking their final international commitments before the Indian Premier League. With their ODI futures tied to the 2027 World Cup—where Agarkar has described their commitment as "non-committal"—such calculated rests highlight the selectors' emphasis on longevity for the stalwarts while prioritizing development for the next generation. The exclusion, though not officially confirmed, reflects a balanced blueprint for India's white-ball resurgence.
