BCCI Selector RP Singh Holds Lengthy Talk with Mohammed Shami after India Snub Controversy
RP Singh meets Mohammed Shami after the India snub controversy; the move is seen as BCCI’s reconciliation step.
Newly appointed BCCI selector RP Singh held a direct and lengthy conversation with veteran pacer Mohammed Shami at Eden Gardens on Sunday, following Day 2 of Bengal’s Ranji Trophy match against Gujarat, amid controversy over Shami’s exclusion from India’s white-ball squad touring Australia. The 35-year-old, who last played for India eight months ago during the 2025 Champions Trophy triumph, had publicly criticised selectors for lack of communication after being overlooked due to fitness concerns. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar responded that Shami would have been selected if fully fit, noting ongoing domestic performances are being monitored.
The discussion, reported by Sportskeeda, took place immediately after play, with Singh engaging Shami at length in what is seen as an effort to address grievances and clarify selection criteria. Shami has been in strong domestic form, recently claiming a seven-wicket match haul—including four in the second innings—to lead Bengal to an eight-wicket victory over Uttarakhand. His fiery spells underscore his readiness, fuelling calls for a national recall ahead of the home ODI series against South Africa in November.
Agarkar, speaking at the NDTV World Summit 2025, emphasised open communication with players and reiterated Shami’s value to Indian cricket. “He has been an incredible performer for India,” Agarkar said, adding that fitness remains the sole barrier. The BCCI is closely tracking Shami’s workload and consistency in the ongoing Ranji season as part of a broader evaluation for the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle.

The selector-pacer dialogue signals proactive management of senior players during India’s transitional phase in white-ball cricket. With Shami’s experience vital in mentoring younger bowlers, his potential return hinges on sustained fitness and domestic impact. Fans and analysts await whether the Eden Gardens meeting paves the way for reconciliation and a swift comeback.
