Virat Kohli Ends Retirement U-Turn Speculation With Straightforward Response

Virat Kohli responds clearly to speculation about a possible retirement reversal.

Former India captain Virat Kohli has firmly ruled out any possibility of reversing his decision to retire from Test cricket, shutting down speculation about a potential comeback to the longest format of the game. The clarification came during a public event in New Delhi on Sunday, where Kohli addressed questions regarding his future in red-ball cricket. Kohli, who retired from Test cricket ahead of India’s 2025 England tour, made his stance unambiguous when asked if he would consider returning to the format.

Responding directly, the 37-year-old said, “I am done with it. Thank you,” ending any ongoing debate about a possible U-turn. His comments reaffirmed his earlier decision to step away from Tests after a long and distinguished career. The speculation around Kohli’s return had surfaced in recent discussions due to India’s evolving Test team composition and the continued demand for experienced batters in the middle order. However, his latest statement has effectively closed the door on any such expectations, at least in the near future.

Meanwhile, Kohli continues to remain part of India’s plans in limited-overs cricket. He has been named in the 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against England, subject to fitness clearance. The selection comes after he missed the recent ODI series against Afghanistan due to a hamstring injury sustained during the Indian Premier League. As part of his recovery process, Kohli is scheduled to report to the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for a fitness assessment.

Medical and sports science staff have been monitoring his rehabilitation, including consultations during his recovery period abroad. The ODI squad announcement, led by Shubman Gill, saw relatively few changes, with the management continuing to build a balance between experienced players and younger talent. Kohli’s return is expected to strengthen the top order, with reports suggesting he will resume his position at No. 3 alongside Rohit Sharma at the top of the order.

The selection panel also made adjustments to the opening options, with Yashasvi Jaiswal omitted after serving as a replacement during Kohli’s absence.Team sources indicated that standard selection protocols typically see replacement players step aside once senior players regain fitness and availability. As India prepares for the upcoming white-ball series against England, Kohli’s presence is expected to provide experience and stability to the batting lineup. However, his comments have made it clear that his journey in Test cricket remains concluded, marking a definitive end to one of the most closely followed chapters in modern Indian cricket history.
