Hardik Pandya Recovery Delayed Before England Series; Kohli Fitness Check Scheduled Soon

Hardik faces injury setback; Kohli fitness test scheduled.

India's concerns over Hardik Pandya's fitness have intensified after reports suggested the star all-rounder is likely to miss the upcoming ODI series against England due to a quadriceps strain, extending a frustrating run of injury setbacks ahead of a crucial period in the team's preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. According to a report by Jagran, Pandya's latest injury has not healed sufficiently, making him unavailable for the England ODIs scheduled next month. The all-rounder had already been ruled out of the recent Afghanistan series after suffering a quadriceps strain while undergoing assessment and rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Pandya had initially travelled to the facility to seek clearance for a back spasm injury sustained during the Indian Premier League while playing for the Mumbai Indians. The latest setback adds to a growing list of fitness concerns that have plagued Pandya in recent years. During the IPL season, he missed several matches for Mumbai Indians before returning for the final stages of the campaign. His recurring injuries have frequently interrupted India's plans, particularly given his importance as a pace-bowling all-rounder capable of providing balance in both batting and bowling departments.

India's team management had reportedly been keen to increase Pandya's workload in the 50-over format as part of preparations for next year's major international assignments. However, repeated injury interruptions have complicated those plans and raised questions about how much competitive cricket he will be able to play before major tournaments. The selectors are understood to be monitoring his recovery closely while considering backup options should his rehabilitation take longer than expected.

Pandya's absence has posed challenges for India before. During the 2023 ODI World Cup, a left ankle injury suffered in a group-stage match against Bangladesh forced him out of the tournament and required the team to alter its balance midway through the campaign. Despite those concerns, the all-rounder remains a central figure in India's long-term white-ball plans and is expected to play a key role if fully fit.

Meanwhile, attention is also focused on Virat Kohli's fitness status ahead of the England series. Reports indicate that the former India captain is scheduled to undergo a fitness assessment in the coming days as the team management evaluates player availability. With Pandya facing another spell on the sidelines and uncertainty surrounding other senior players, India's selectors are expected to keep contingency plans ready as they finalise the squad for the upcoming ODI assignment against England.
