Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Under Fire As Punishment Demands Intensify Following Controversy
Former cricketer questions youngster's conduct, urges disciplinary response.
Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has said young cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should have faced disciplinary action following his heated confrontation with a Sri Lanka A player during the ongoing Tri-Nation A series. Manjrekar remarked that if he had been part of the India A team management, he would have dropped the 15-year-old batter from the subsequent match against Afghanistan A as a lesson in maintaining discipline on the field.
The comments came after an incident during the fourth match of the Tri-Nation A series between India A and Sri Lanka A earlier this week. Emotions ran high following a Super Over that ended in a victory for Sri Lanka A. Television footage showed Sooryavanshi moving toward the opposition camp and appearing to shove Sri Lanka A player Vishen Halambage after the contest had concluded.
Reports following the incident suggested that Halambage had been involved in persistent sledging directed at Sooryavanshi throughout the tournament. The verbal exchanges reportedly intensified during the closely contested encounter, contributing to tensions between the players. However, despite the alleged provocation, Manjrekar stressed that physical confrontations have no place in cricket and that players must exercise restraint under pressure.

Speaking about the episode, Manjrekar said there are clear boundaries that athletes should not cross, regardless of the circumstances. He argued that while sledging and verbal exchanges have long been part of competitive sport, responding physically is unacceptable. According to the former cricketer, disciplinary measures would have served as an important learning experience for a player at the beginning of his professional journey.
The incident has generated discussion among cricket followers and former players about how young athletes should be guided when dealing with high-pressure situations. Sooryavanshi is regarded as one of India's promising young talents, and the episode has highlighted the challenges faced by emerging players as they adapt to the intensity and scrutiny of international-level competition.
While no official disciplinary action has been announced, the confrontation has renewed debate about sportsmanship and conduct in cricket. Coaches and administrators have often emphasized the importance of emotional control, particularly among younger players, arguing that talent must be complemented by professionalism and respect for the spirit of the game. The incident is likely to remain a talking point as the Tri-Nation A series progresses.
