Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Named East Zone Vice-Captain For Duleep Trophy 2026
Former CSK player gets major coaching role.
Young Indian cricket sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been appointed vice-captain of the East Zone team for the Duleep Trophy 2026, with Ishan Kishan named as captain. The decision to hand leadership responsibility to the 15-year-old batter has attracted attention, with some questioning whether the added pressure could affect his development.
Explaining the decision, former Odisha Ranji Trophy player and East Zone selector Pravanjan Mullick said the move was intended to help Sooryavanshi grow as a leader rather than place the burden of captaincy on him. He clarified that Sooryavanshi would serve as deputy to Ishan Kishan and would not be responsible for leading the side throughout the match.
Mullick said Ishan Kishan’s role as a wicketkeeper means he will remain actively involved throughout games, allowing Sooryavanshi to learn leadership skills gradually. He added that providing responsibility at a young age would help the teenager gain experience and improve his maturity as a cricketer.

The selector also highlighted Sooryavanshi’s previous leadership experience, stating that the youngster is already the vice-captain of Bihar in first-class cricket. He also served as deputy to Ayush Mhatre during the Under-19 World Cup, demonstrating his ability to take up leadership roles at different levels.
Mullick praised Sooryavanshi’s performances for India and his impressive IPL season with Rajasthan Royals. He said the selectors believe young players should be given opportunities to develop leadership qualities and expressed hope that the teenager could eventually take up a bigger role in Indian cricket.
The appointment is being viewed as part of a long-term development plan for Sooryavanshi, who has emerged as one of India’s most promising young talents. With the Duleep Trophy providing a platform against strong domestic competition, the leadership role is expected to give him valuable experience as he continues his cricketing journey.
