Sunil Gavaskar Explains Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Stumping During India Debut Against England

Gavaskar explains youngster's dismissal in England debut.

Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi endured a brief but eventful international debut as India faced England in the second T20 International in Manchester on Saturday. The 15-year-old scored 14 runs off 10 deliveries before being stumped by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler off the bowling of Will Jacks. Despite his early dismissal, Sooryavanshi showcased glimpses of his immense talent with two towering sixes, while former India captain Sunil Gavaskar offered a technical assessment of the youngster's wicket, saying the shot that led to his dismissal was unlike his natural game.

Sooryavanshi's innings featured fearless strokeplay against England's pace attack. He announced himself by dispatching Jofra Archer for a six with an audacious whip-scoop behind square before striking Josh Tongue over long-on with a powerful shot reminiscent of his performances in franchise cricket. However, England captain Harry Brook quickly turned to off-spinner Will Jacks, who deceived the young batter with a wide, flighted delivery outside the off stump. Attempting an ambitious cut after charging down the pitch, Sooryavanshi failed to connect, allowing Buttler to complete a straightforward stumping.

Reacting to the dismissal during the broadcast, Gavaskar said the youngster had departed while attempting a shot that was not characteristic of his batting style. "That is not his shot. His shot is the cover drive," the batting great said on Sony Sports, suggesting the left-hander would have been better served sticking to the strengths that have earned him recognition at the domestic and junior levels. Earlier in the broadcast, Gavaskar had expressed excitement over Sooryavanshi's debut, describing him as "India's baby" and predicting that millions of fans would eagerly watch his first appearance in international cricket.

The match marked a historic milestone for Sooryavanshi, who became India's youngest-ever international debutant at the age of 15 years and 99 days. In doing so, he surpassed a long-standing record held by legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar, who made his Test debut at 16 years and 205 days and his One-Day International debut at 16 years and 238 days. The teenager's rapid rise has generated widespread attention following his impressive performances in age-group and domestic cricket, making his selection one of the most anticipated moments of India's T20 season.

Although Sooryavanshi's debut innings ended sooner than many had hoped, India managed to post a competitive total of 190 for seven in challenging overcast and windy conditions. The innings was anchored by Tilak Varma, whose late flourish in the final over boosted India's score after the middle order faced periods of pressure. While the teenager's stay at the crease lasted only 10 deliveries, his confidence against express pace and willingness to attack from the outset offered encouraging signs for the future. His debut may have ended in disappointment, but it also provided a glimpse of the potential that has made him one of India's most exciting young cricket prospects.
