Gavaskar Blames Ishan Kishan For Run-Out Mix-Up With Abhishek Sharma
Gavaskar blames Ishan Kishan for run-out mix-up with Abhishek.
India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan endured a disappointing outing in the first T20 International against England after being run out for a two-ball duck following a mix-up with opening partner Abhishek Sharma. The dismissal quickly became one of the major talking points of the match, with television cameras capturing Abhishek's animated reaction as the confusion unfolded. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar also weighed in during commentary, placing the responsibility for the run-out squarely on Kishan.
The incident occurred when Kishan attempted a quick single despite Abhishek Sharma refusing the run. Audio picked up on the broadcast captured Abhishek shouting, "Kya kar raha hai?" ("What are you doing?"), as he sent his batting partner back. Kishan failed to return to his crease in time and was run out without scoring, giving England an early breakthrough in India's innings.
Commentating on the dismissal, Sunil Gavaskar said there was little doubt over who was responsible for the mix-up. He stated that while batters often look to get off the mark quickly in the shortest format, the error was entirely Kishan's. Gavaskar added that Abhishek had made his decision clear, and the confusion resulted solely from Kishan's attempt to complete the single.

Despite the early setback, India recovered strongly through captain Shreyas Iyer and Abhishek Sharma. Iyer produced his first half-century as India's T20I captain, scoring 68 from 47 deliveries, while Abhishek played an aggressive knock of 59 off just 24 balls. Shivam Dube then provided a powerful finish with an unbeaten 42 from 21 balls, helping India post a competitive total of 189 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs.
However, persistent rain prevented England from beginning their chase at the Riverside Ground. The covers were brought on immediately after India's innings, and heavy showers continued throughout the evening. Match officials waited until the cut-off time for a five-over contest before deciding conditions would not improve sufficiently for play to resume, resulting in the match being abandoned without a result.
The abandoned contest meant both teams shared the points, with India's strong batting display ultimately going unrewarded. While Kishan's run-out and Abhishek's on-field reaction generated considerable discussion among fans and experts, India's batting performance, led by Iyer, Abhishek and Dube, provided encouraging signs ahead of the remaining matches in the T20I series against England.
