Shubman Gill Regains Top ODI Ranking; Sooryavanshi Surges After Massive T20I Rise

India captain Shubman Gill reclaimed the top position in the ICC ODI batting rankings on Wednesday, while teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made a remarkable jump in the T20I rankings, rising 230 places after his impressive performances during India’s recent tour of Zimbabwe. Gill returned to the No. 1 spot in ODI batting after New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell slipped from the top position. Mitchell had occupied the No. 1 ranking since January this year, but his absence from recent ODI action allowed Gill to regain the leading position in the latest ICC rankings update.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that changes at the top of the ODI rankings followed the conclusion of the recent series between the West Indies and New Zealand. With Mitchell not featuring in the series, Gill moved back to the summit of the 50-over batting rankings. "There was some change at the top of the latest ODI rankings following the completion of the recent series between the West Indies and New Zealand as the absence of Black Caps' right-hander Daryl Mitchell saw Shubman Gill move back to become the No. 1 ranked batter in 50-over cricket," the ICC said.

Gill’s return to the top ranking comes as he continues to establish himself as one of India’s most consistent performers across formats. The right-handed batter has been a key figure in India’s ODI setup and recently took over leadership responsibilities, further increasing expectations around his performances. Meanwhile, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi produced one of the biggest movements in the latest T20I rankings after his outstanding performances against Zimbabwe. The young batter climbed 230 places to reach the 48th position in the ICC T20I batting rankings.

Sooryavanshi played a crucial role in India’s three-match T20I series victory over Zimbabwe, scoring 151 runs at an average of 50.33. His two half-centuries helped India complete a 3-0 series sweep and earned him significant recognition from the ICC rankings system. The teenager’s rise is particularly notable considering his limited international experience. His current rating of 536 points places him behind more established players, but his rapid progress highlights his potential as one of India’s most exciting young batting prospects.

India’s Ishan Kishan continues to lead the T20I batting rankings with 910 rating points. Kishan had reached 916 points after the second T20I against Zimbabwe, becoming one of the highest-rated Indian batters in the format. His peak rating placed him behind only Abhishek Sharma and Dawid Malan in terms of the highest career T20I batting ratings. Despite a slight drop in rating points, Kishan maintains a strong advantage over second-ranked Sahibzada Farhan, who has 848 points. The ICC also noted that Kishan’s career rating has surpassed the peak ratings achieved by several established Indian stars, including Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli.

Other Indian players also made progress in the latest rankings update. Tilak Varma moved up two places to sixth in the T20I batting rankings, while T20I captain Shreyas Iyer climbed seven spots to 24th. In the bowling rankings, leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi gained 31 places to reach 41st, while Varun Chakravarthy remained inside the top 10 despite dropping three positions. International players also benefited from strong performances. Zimbabwe’s Ryan Burl moved six places higher to 85th in the T20I batting rankings, while Blessing Muzarabani climbed 10 spots to 26th among bowlers.

In Test cricket, West Indies all-rounder Justin Greaves earned major gains after his impressive performance against Pakistan. Greaves took five consecutive wicket-maidens in Tarouba during the West Indies’ 90-run victory and moved up 21 places to 48th in the Test bowling rankings. He also climbed to ninth among Test all-rounders. Pakistan’s Mohammad Abbas also improved after claiming a five-wicket haul, moving to 17th in the Test bowling rankings, while Babar Azam rose to 15th among Test batters following an unbeaten half-century in the second innings. The latest ICC rankings reflect significant movement across formats, with established stars reclaiming positions and emerging talents such as Sooryavanshi making their mark on the international stage.
