Farokh Engineer Backs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi To Open ODIs With Rohit

Former India wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer has backed teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to make India's ODI squad ahead of the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, suggesting the left-handed opener should partner Rohit Sharma at the top of the order. Engineer believes the 15-year-old's aggressive batting style and recent performances have earned him an opportunity in the 50-over format, while also proposing a reshuffle in India's batting order to strengthen the middle order.

Speaking after India's ODI series against Zimbabwe, Engineer suggested that Shubman Gill should move to the No. 4 position, allowing Sooryavanshi to open alongside Rohit Sharma. He said a left-right opening combination would provide greater balance, while Virat Kohli could continue batting at No. 3. According to Engineer, the revised order would give India a more solid and flexible batting line-up heading into future tournaments.

Sooryavanshi recently impressed during India's three-match series against Zimbabwe, where he was named Player of the Series after scoring 151 runs, including two half-centuries. His consistent performances at the top of the order played a key role in India's clean sweep, further strengthening his case for selection in the ODI side despite his young age.

Engineer said there should not be a significant distinction between T20 and ODI cricket when assessing a batter with Sooryavanshi's ability. He argued that the youngster's confidence, attacking mindset and ability to exploit fielding restrictions make him ideally suited to opening the innings in one-day internationals. According to the former cricketer, quick starts from Sooryavanshi would allow the middle order more time to build substantial totals.

The former India wicketkeeper also cautioned against over-coaching the teenager, describing him as a naturally gifted player capable of changing matches on his own. Drawing comparisons with legendary West Indies batter Viv Richards, Engineer said exceptional talents often thrive when allowed to play with freedom rather than being confined by rigid technical methods. He added that Sooryavanshi had already shown an ability to learn from mistakes while retaining his fearless approach.

While Engineer's comments reflect his personal opinion rather than any official selection plans, they have added to the growing excitement surrounding Sooryavanshi's rise in Indian cricket. With the 2027 ODI World Cup still some time away, the youngster's continued performances at the domestic and international levels are likely to determine whether he earns a place in India's long-term plans for the 50-over format.
