Shreyas Iyer Reveals His Take On Sooryavanshi-Sanju Samson Battle Ahead Of Afghanistan T20I

India take on Afghanistan in the first T20I of a three-match series at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday, with captain Shreyas Iyer facing an important selection call at the top of the batting order. The series is part of India's preparations for the Asian Games 2026 and has brought the spotlight back on the competition between young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and experienced wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson. All three matches of the series are scheduled to be played in Delhi, on September 13, 15 and 17.

The biggest question surrounding India's playing XI is whether the team management will continue with Sooryavanshi alongside Abhishek Sharma or bring Samson back into the opening combination. Abhishek has established himself as one of India's preferred options at the top of the order, leaving the management with a decision over the other opening slot. Both Sooryavanshi and Samson are part of India's squad, while Ishan Kishan also provides another wicketkeeping-batting option. The selection call gives Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir an interesting challenge ahead of the opening game.

Sooryavanshi enters the Afghanistan series after an impressive run for India against Zimbabwe. The teenager was India's leading run-scorer in the three-match T20I series in July, scoring 151 runs at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 196.10. He scored a half-century in the opening match and followed it with a career-best 81 in the third game, finishing the series with two fifties and the Player of the Series award. His performances have strengthened his case for another opportunity at the top of the order.

Samson, meanwhile, brings considerable international experience and remains part of India's plans in the shortest format. His presence creates a direct selection dilemma because the team must balance current form, experience and the need to give a promising young player regular opportunities. Samson's ability to bat at the top of the order and keep wickets gives India flexibility, while Sooryavanshi's recent performances have made it difficult to overlook him. The first T20I could therefore provide an early indication of how the management sees the two players competing for their respective roles.

Iyer's role will be particularly important as India begin another phase under his leadership. The BCCI named him captain for the Afghanistan series, with Tilak Varma as vice-captain. The squad also includes several established names, including Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel and Varun Chakaravarthy, alongside emerging players. The series is expected to give India an opportunity to assess combinations and player roles before the Asian Games, making the selection decisions in Delhi significant beyond the opening match.

The Afghanistan series also gives India an opportunity to test themselves against a side boasting experienced T20 players such as Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. With all three matches being played at the same venue, conditions and player combinations will be closely watched throughout the series. For India, however, the immediate focus remains on the opening game and the decision surrounding Sooryavanshi and Samson. The youngster's strong recent form has put pressure on the established options, while Samson's experience ensures that the battle for a place in the XI remains one of the central talking points of the first T20I.
