Shreyas Iyer Admits Ireland Outplayed India After Crushing T20I Series Defeat

Shreyas Iyer praises Ireland after India's disappointing T20I series loss.

India captain Shreyas Iyer admitted his side was comprehensively outplayed after Ireland completed a historic 2-0 T20I series sweep with a thrilling one-run victory in the second match. The visitors, who had already secured a 34-run win in the opening game, successfully defended their total once again to seal one of the biggest bilateral T20I series triumphs in Ireland's history.

Reflecting on the defeat, Iyer credited Ireland for their superior understanding of the conditions and disciplined execution throughout the series. He said the hosts assessed the pitch better, fielded exceptionally well and executed their bowling plans with precision. "Not a great series but kudos to them for the way they played. They had a tremendous idea how the wicket would play and the field work was phenomenal. The bowlers were phenomenal with their execution. They outplayed us in that department," Iyer said during the post-series presentation.

Despite the disappointing result, the India skipper highlighted the performances of debutant pacer Prince Yadav, who impressed with figures of 3 for 22 in his maiden T20I appearance. Iyer also praised Suryansh Shedge, saying both youngsters brought fresh ideas and confidence, aided by their experience in the Indian Premier League, providing positives for the team going forward.

Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker described the series victory as a landmark achievement that was still difficult to comprehend. He said he had challenged his players to prove that their opening victory was no fluke, and they responded with the same aggressive intent. Tucker added that the team kept its approach simple and was particularly pleased with the character shown by several inexperienced players despite injuries to key members of the squad ahead of the series.

Player of the Match and Player of the Series Moondra said the magnitude of the achievement was still sinking in. The cricketer, who moved to Dublin to pursue an M.Tech degree, credited the Ireland team management for backing him through difficult phases and making him feel at home in the dressing room. Moondra said sticking to the basics, trusting the process and working in a supportive environment played a key role in his performances during the series.
