India Criticised After Shock Defeat To Ireland, Shreyas Iyer And Team Under Fire

India suffer shocking defeat against Ireland.

Former India opener Sadagoppan Ramesh has criticised the Indian cricket team following their unexpected 34-run defeat to Ireland in the first T20 International of the two-match series, calling the performance “shocking and inexplicable.” The loss, which came shortly after India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2026, has been described by analysts as one of the biggest upsets of the year.

India, led by newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer, were bowled out for 148 while chasing Ireland’s total of 182, after the hosts opted to bat first. Despite a strong individual performance from Abhishek Sharma, who scored 49 off 20 balls, India’s batting line-up struggled to build partnerships and faltered under pressure. Ireland’s disciplined bowling attack ensured regular breakthroughs, ultimately restricting the visitors well short of the target.

Reacting to the result, Sadagoppan Ramesh said the Indian side appeared to have taken the series too lightly and lacked the intensity expected at international level. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he suggested that the team treated the Ireland tour as a low-priority assignment ahead of their more high-profile T20 series against England. He argued that such an approach contributed to complacency within the squad and led to the surprise defeat.

Ramesh further stated that the match should have been viewed with greater seriousness regardless of opposition strength, emphasising that overconfidence often leads to unexpected setbacks in sport. He compared the series to a brief preparatory stop rather than a competitive assignment, adding that Ireland capitalised on India’s lack of focus to deliver a disciplined and energetic performance. His remarks reflected broader concerns about mindset and preparation following a major global tournament victory.

Highlighting the shock value of the result, Ramesh noted that India had recently concluded a successful T20 World Cup campaign and had also spent several months competing in the Indian Premier League, making the defeat even more surprising. With the second T20I scheduled for Sunday, India will look to bounce back and avoid a rare series defeat under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, while head coach Gautam Gambhir will be under pressure to ensure a stronger response in the upcoming match.
