Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Told To Wait For Debut, Coach Rejects Superstar Culture In Team Selection

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's debut delayed as merit takes priority.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has urged patience over the international debut of teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, saying there is currently no place for the 15-year-old in India's playing XI despite growing calls for his inclusion. Speaking after India opted to retain the opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson for the first T20 International against Ireland, Ashwin argued that the team management should continue backing the established duo instead of rushing the youngster into international cricket. He also stressed that Indian cricket should avoid creating a "superstar culture" around emerging players.

Sooryavanshi, a left-handed batter regarded as one of India's brightest young talents, was named in the squad for the T20I series against Ireland and was on the verge of creating history by potentially becoming India's youngest-ever international debutant. Had he played in the opening match in Belfast, he would have surpassed the records held by Sachin Tendulkar and Shafali Verma. However, the team management chose to retain the World Cup-winning opening combination of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, leaving the teenager on the bench for the series opener.

The decision sparked debate among cricket experts and fans after Sanju Samson failed to make a significant contribution in the first T20I. Many called for Sooryavanshi to be handed his debut in the second match at the same venue. Ashwin, however, disagreed with those demands, arguing that one poor performance should not be enough to replace established players. He maintained that both Samson and Abhishek deserved a longer run in the side, particularly as they are specialist T20 cricketers who are not regular members of India's Test or One-Day International squads.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin suggested that the national selectors, headed by Ajit Agarkar, should instead consider introducing Sooryavanshi during India's upcoming tour of Zimbabwe ahead of the Asian Games. "There is no place for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi right now. If he has to play, then selectors should send him to the Zimbabwe tour, where these incumbent openers will not be there. But it seems difficult. Sanju Samson is not in the Test or ODI teams, and the same goes for Abhishek Sharma. Earlier, one player used to play in all three formats," Ashwin said.

Ashwin also cautioned against placing excessive expectations on young cricketers before they have established themselves at the international level. He said Indian cricket should focus on building a competitive team environment rather than elevating individual players too quickly. According to the veteran off-spinner, opportunities should be earned through performance and timing rather than public demand or social media hype. He believes allowing Sooryavanshi to develop gradually would benefit both the player and the national team over the long term.

Sooryavanshi's rapid rise has generated considerable excitement following his performances in domestic and age-group cricket, with many viewing him as one of India's most promising batting prospects. While his inclusion in the national squad has already marked a significant milestone in his career, Ashwin believes patience remains the best approach. Whether the teenager makes his debut later in the Ireland series or on a future tour, the discussion surrounding his selection has highlighted the challenge of balancing exceptional young talent with the need to maintain stability and continuity in India's playing XI.
