Sanjog Gupta Appointed ICC CEO, Strengthening India’s Grip on Global Cricket
Sanjog Gupta assumes the role immediately under ICC Chairman Jay Shah
Indian media executive Sanjog Gupta was named the new Chief Executive Officer of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday, succeeding Geoff Allardice, who stepped down after serving his notice period, the PTI reported. Gupta, previously the CEO of Sports & Live Experiences at JioStar, assumes the role immediately under ICC Chairman Jay Shah, marking a significant boost to India’s influence in global cricket governance.
The ICC received over 2,500 applications from 25 countries, shortlisting 12 candidates ranging from sports administrators to corporate leaders. The Nominations Committee, including ICC deputy chairman Imran Khwaja, ECB’s Richard Thompson, SLC’s Shammi Silva, and BCCI’s Devajit Saikia, unanimously recommended Gupta, a decision ratified by Shah and the ICC Board.
Gupta, who began his career as a journalist at The Tribune before joining Star India (now JioStar) in 2010, has been a pivotal figure in cricket broadcasting. He spearheaded JioStar’s $3 billion ICC media rights deal and drove record viewership for the Indian Premier League (IPL), notably 400.5 billion minutes on Disney+ Hotstar in 2020. Appointed JioStar Sports CEO in November 2024 after the Viacom18-Disney Star merger, Gupta brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialization.

“I’m excited to contribute to cricket’s evolution, expanding its global footprint and enhancing fan experiences,” Gupta said, emphasizing his focus on the sport’s Olympic debut in 2028 and navigating challenges like the IPL’s expansion to 94 matches by 2028 and India-Pakistan geopolitical tensions impacting ICC events.
