Rohit Sharma's Parents Reach London Amid Buzz Over His Final ODI

Rohit Sharma's parents reach London ahead of final ODI against England.

Rohit Sharma's parents have reportedly arrived in London ahead of India's third and final ODI against England at Lord's, adding to speculation surrounding the veteran opener's future in international cricket. The development comes amid reports suggesting that the series decider could potentially be Rohit's final One-Day International for India. While neither the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) nor the player has made any official announcement regarding his retirement or future, discussions have intensified following India's recent performances in the series.

According to a report by Crex, Rohit's parents, Gurunath Sharma and Purnima Sharma, have travelled to London and are expected to be present at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground to watch the decisive match. The report stated that the family members will witness the final ODI as India and England battle for the series victory. Their reported presence has further fuelled speculation, although there has been no official confirmation linking the visit to any retirement plans.

The uncertainty surrounding Rohit's future has grown after reports claimed that the Ajit Agarkar-led national selection committee is considering transitioning towards a younger squad in preparation for the 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. According to these reports, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is among the players being considered for a more prominent role in India's 50-over plans. However, the BCCI has not confirmed any decision regarding Rohit's place in the squad.

Rohit has endured a difficult start to the series, registering scores of 11 and 26 in the opening two matches. India won the first ODI before England bounced back with a four-wicket victory in Cardiff to level the three-match series. Batting first, India posted 233 runs on the back of half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. England successfully chased the target, with Joe Root anchoring the innings through an unbeaten 99, finishing just one run short of a century after Gus Atkinson struck the winning boundary.

Former India captain Anil Kumble praised Root's composed innings, highlighting the England batter's traditional approach to One-Day cricket. Kumble described Root as England's equivalent of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in terms of his ability to absorb pressure and guide a chase. He noted that while England's other batters attacked aggressively, Root remained patient, stabilised the innings and ultimately steered his team to victory with a measured knock.

The final ODI at Lord's has therefore assumed greater significance, not only as the series decider but also because of the speculation surrounding Rohit's international future. Despite widespread reports and public debate, there has been no official statement from Rohit Sharma, the BCCI or the selection committee regarding his retirement or exclusion from India's ODI plans. Until such confirmation is issued, discussions over whether Sunday's match could mark the end of Rohit's ODI career remain speculative.
