Report Reveals BCCI's Decision to Drop Rohit Sharma From ODIs

BCCI selectors reportedly decide to drop Rohit Sharma from ODIs.

Speculation over Rohit Sharma's future in One-Day International cricket has intensified following reports that the third ODI against England at Lord's on July 19 could be his final appearance in the format for India. According to multiple reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has begun planning for the team's long-term future ahead of the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup, with selectors reportedly looking to transition towards a younger squad. However, no official announcement has been made by the BCCI or Rohit Sharma regarding his retirement from ODI cricket.

According to reports, Rohit recently held discussions with BCCI officials during the ongoing three-match ODI series against England. The Indian Express reported that the veteran opener was unhappy with the selectors' stance after being informed of their plans. Another report, citing a BCCI source, claimed that the selection committee had conveyed its decision to move on from Rohit after the current series, with head coach Gautam Gambhir also reportedly involved in the discussions. The reports suggest the decision is part of a broader strategy aimed at preparing the squad for the next World Cup cycle.

The selectors are reportedly keen to provide more opportunities to younger players, particularly opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has impressed across formats and is viewed as a long-term option at the top of the order. With Rohit expected to be over 40 years old by the time the 2027 ODI World Cup takes place, reports indicate that the management is looking to build a new core while giving emerging players adequate international experience over the next two years.

Despite the speculation, Rohit remains one of India's most accomplished ODI cricketers. Since making his debut, he has played 286 One-Day Internationals, scoring 11,731 runs and establishing himself as one of the most successful opening batters in the history of the format. Renowned for his aggressive stroke play and ability to score big hundreds, Rohit has been a central figure in India's limited-overs success for more than a decade.

As captain, Rohit has also enjoyed considerable success, leading India in 56 ODIs. Under his leadership, India reached the final of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup and later lifted the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in the United Arab Emirates. Earlier, on May 7, 2025, Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket ahead of India's tour of England, after which Shubman Gill was appointed as India's Test captain.

While reports continue to suggest that Sunday's ODI at Lord's could mark the end of Rohit's international career in the 50-over format, neither the player nor the BCCI has officially confirmed the claims. Until a formal announcement is made, his future remains the subject of speculation. The third ODI against England is therefore expected to attract significant attention, not only because of its importance in the series but also due to the uncertainty surrounding one of India's most celebrated ODI careers.
