Rare 10-Run Penalty For India A After Vipraj Nigam Breaches Pitch Rules Twice
India A penalised 10 runs vs Sri Lanka A match.
India A were docked 10 runs during their batting innings against Sri Lanka A in the fourth match of the Tri-Nation A series at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Monday, after repeated violations of the rule against running on the protected area of the pitch. The incident unfolded across the latter half of India A’s innings when Vipraj Nigam was found guilty of running on the danger area of the pitch on multiple occasions.
Under playing conditions, repeated infringement of the protected strip is treated seriously as it can damage the surface and affect fairness in play, particularly for bowlers relying on consistent pitch behaviour. The issue began earlier in the innings when Anukul Roy was issued a first warning for running on the pitch. While Roy was later dismissed in the 33rd over, the warning remained active and was carried forward to subsequent batters as per regulations.
This meant India A were already under scrutiny for maintaining discipline on the central strip. The situation escalated in the 35th over, bowled by Sri Lanka A’s Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, when Vipraj Nigam was found to have run on the protected area again. This resulted in a second warning being issued, followed immediately by a five-run penalty. The delivery in question was also declared a dead ball in accordance with the rules governing pitch protection.

A similar incident occurred in the 37th over when Nigam once again made contact with the danger area while attempting to manipulate a delivery from Kugathas Mathulan towards the short third-man region for a quick single. This repeated breach triggered another five-run penalty against India A. As a result of the two separate infractions, Sri Lanka A were effectively awarded 10 penalty runs, which were added before their chase began.
The enforcement of penalties under these circumstances is in line with playing regulations designed to preserve the integrity and safety of the pitch throughout a match. The incident proved costly for India A, who were already under pressure in a tightly contested game. The disciplinary lapse highlighted the importance of awareness among batters regarding pitch movement restrictions, especially in limited-overs formats where even small infractions can have a significant impact on the final result.
