Patidar Takes Charge as Central Zone Captain For Duleep Trophy

India batter Rajat Patidar has been appointed captain of the Central Zone team for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, while middle-order batter Rinku Singh has been named vice-captain for the prestigious domestic tournament. The competition is scheduled to begin later this month at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, with the Central Zone aiming to make a strong impression under Patidar's leadership. The tournament will run from August 23 to September 10 and serves as one of India's premier first-class domestic competitions, providing players with an opportunity to stake their claim for higher honours.

Patidar's appointment comes after his growing stature in Indian domestic cricket and his successful leadership stint with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he guided the franchise to two Indian Premier League titles. Rinku Singh, meanwhile, has been rewarded with the vice-captaincy following consistent performances in domestic and international cricket. The leadership duo is expected to bring both experience and stability to the Central Zone squad as it prepares for a challenging campaign against other zonal teams.

The squad also includes off-spinner Saransh Jain, although he is expected to miss at least the opening phase of the tournament due to national commitments. Jain has been selected in India's Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka and is considered a strong contender to make his Test debut in the opening match at Galle. His inclusion gained further significance after off-spin all-rounder Washington Sundar was ruled out of the first Test, increasing the likelihood of Jain featuring in the playing XI.

India's two-match Test series against Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin on August 15 at the Galle International Stadium, with the second Test set to be played in Colombo from August 23. Jain's availability for the Duleep Trophy will therefore depend on the duration of his international duties. His absence during the initial stages could present an opportunity for other bowlers in the Central Zone squad to make an impact before he rejoins the team later in the tournament.

The Central Zone squad features a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent. Alongside Patidar and Rinku Singh, the team includes wicketkeepers Aryan Juyal and Kunal Singh Rathod, as well as Aman Mokhade, Kunal Chandela, Zeeshan Ansari, Aryan Pandey, Arshad Khan, Ayush Pandey, Yash Rathod, Harsh Dubey, Yash Thakur and Nachiket Bhute. The stand-by list comprises Amandeep Khare, Mayank Mishra, Saurabh Rawat, Bhargav Merai, Kunal Yadav and Kumar Kartikeya, ensuring depth in case of injuries or player unavailability.

The Duleep Trophy remains one of India's most significant domestic red-ball tournaments, often serving as a platform for players to impress national selectors ahead of the international season.
