Ollie Robinson Takes 4/10 As England Dominate New Zealand At Lord’s

Ollie Robinson takes 4/10 as New Zealand collapse early.

England and New Zealand were locked in a gripping, fast-bowling dominated contest at Lord’s on Thursday, where 18 wickets fell on a dramatic opening day shaped by overcast skies, rain interruptions and relentless seam movement. The match swung rapidly between the two sides, with both batting line-ups struggling to cope with the conditions on a surface offering consistent assistance to the pacers.

New Zealand were left in deep trouble at 61/6 at stumps after bowling England out for 140 earlier in the day in 39.4 overs. The visiting bowlers initially set the tone, but England’s response with the ball ensured that the contest remained evenly poised despite the low scores. Notably, not a single over of spin was bowled throughout the day, underlining the dominance of pace and swing.

England’s Ollie Robinson produced a sensational return to Test cricket, finishing with remarkable figures of 4/10 from six overs. Coming back into the Test side after a long absence since February 2024, Robinson made an immediate impact, striking three times in his first over and setting the tone for New Zealand’s collapse. His accuracy, seam movement and ability to exploit the conditions proved decisive in breaking through the top order.

Robinson’s wickets included key New Zealand batters Devon Conway, Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra, all dismissed in quick succession as England surged ahead in the morning session. He later returned to claim the wicket of Daryl Mitchell, further tightening England’s grip on the innings. Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue also chipped in with crucial breakthroughs, ensuring that New Zealand never recovered from the early damage.

Despite England’s dominance with the ball, New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson also enjoyed a successful return to Test cricket, claiming 5/62 in England’s first innings. Supported by Will O’Rourke and Nathan Smith, Jamieson exploited the same conditions effectively, using his height and bounce to trouble the English batters. England’s innings, however, still managed to reach 140, largely due to brief lower-order resistance before being wrapped up inside two sessions.

The day was heavily disrupted by weather, with multiple rain delays and interruptions due to poor light affecting the rhythm of play. Floodlights were switched on as early as mid-afternoon, but visibility remained inconsistent, eventually forcing early tea and an early stumps call. These interruptions allowed the fast bowlers to recover between spells, further enhancing their effectiveness and keeping batting conditions extremely difficult throughout.

England’s batting collapse set the tone early, as they slipped from a relatively stable position to lose wickets in clusters. New Zealand’s seamers struck repeatedly, with Matt Henry, despite a brief back issue, and his fellow pacers maintaining pressure through disciplined lines and movement off the pitch. However, the lack of sustained partnerships meant England were unable to post a competitive total. New Zealand’s second innings offered little relief, as they once again struggled against England’s disciplined attack.

While Glenn Phillips remained unbeaten on 31 at stumps and attempted to steady the innings, the visitors were already under significant pressure at 61/6. With only a handful of recognised batters remaining, England ended the day in a commanding position despite the modest nature of their first-innings total. Overall, the opening day at Lord’s was defined by pace bowling excellence, unstable conditions and rapid momentum shifts. Both sides enjoyed moments of dominance, but England’s late burst with the ball ensured they finished the day with a clear upper hand in what remains a delicately poised Test match.
