Shreyas Iyer Set To Become India’s New T20I Captain, To Attend BCCI Selection Meeting
Shreyas Iyer set to lead India’s T20I team forward.
Shreyas Iyer is set to be appointed as India’s new T20I captain, according to sources quoted by NDTV, marking a major leadership change in the national side. He is expected to replace Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to recent success in the format. The decision, sources said, was discussed during a BCCI Apex Council meeting held on Thursday.
Iyer is also expected to attend the BCCI selection meeting on Saturday, where squads for upcoming assignments—including the Ireland and England tours, as well as the Asian Games—are scheduled to be finalised. His presence at the meeting is seen as part of the formal transition process in the team’s leadership structure.
The 30-year-old batter, who last played a T20I for India against Australia in Bengaluru in December 2023, is set to return to the national setup following an impressive domestic and IPL campaign. In the recently concluded IPL 2026 season, Iyer scored 498 runs for Punjab Kings, strengthening his case for a comeback and leadership role.

India’s next T20I assignments include a two-match series in Ireland, with games scheduled for June 26 and June 28, followed by a more extensive tour of England featuring five T20Is and three ODIs. These series are expected to mark the beginning of a new phase in India’s T20I team direction under fresh leadership.
Meanwhile, reports have suggested that Tilak Varma has been identified as the leading candidate for the vice-captaincy role, following discussions between BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and the selection committee. The leadership restructuring is seen as part of a long-term planning cycle ahead of future ICC tournaments.
Suryakumar Yadav, who captained India to a T20 World Cup title, has faced scrutiny over his recent batting form, including 242 runs in nine World Cup matches and a modest IPL 2026 season. Former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim, speaking to PTI, said selectors may be “looking ahead” and emphasized the need for future-focused team building.
