Mumbai Indians Back Deepak Chahar Despite Fielding Error in IPL 2026 Clash vs KKR

Mumbai Indians back Deepak Chahar after IPL 2026 error.

Mumbai Indians assistant coach Paras Mhambrey has defended fast bowler Deepak Chahar after a costly fielding lapse in their IPL 2026 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, stating that the team will not single out individual players for mistakes despite a narrow defeat in a low-scoring encounter. Mumbai Indians were defending a modest total of 147/8, a score that required disciplined fielding and near-perfect execution to stay competitive.

However, two dropped catching opportunities involving Chahar proved decisive, allowing Kolkata Knight Riders to maintain momentum during their chase and eventually secure the win. The first incident occurred in the 10th over when Rovman Powell offered a catching chance from deep fine leg. Chahar, running in from the boundary, reached a promising position but the ball ultimately fell between him and teammate Robin Minz, resulting in a missed opportunity that could have shifted the match balance at a crucial stage.

A second fielding lapse followed in the 18th over when another catch chance went unconverted. Chahar again converged from deep fine leg, and while wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton completed the catch after moving across, there was visible confusion in communication, leading to a near-collision between the two fielders. The incident also raised concerns about coordination and calling in high-pressure fielding situations.

Despite these errors, Mhambrey was firm in his stance that the team would not place blame on any single player. He emphasised that dropped catches are part of the game and not reflective of intent or effort, adding that the coaching staff would avoid overanalysing isolated mistakes in a high-intensity tournament environment like the IPL.

He acknowledged that the dropped chance involving Powell could have altered the match significantly, potentially adding 15–20 extra runs and changing the tactical equation. However, he stressed that Mumbai Indians prefer to focus on overall performance rather than dwelling on individual lapses, especially in tightly contested matches.

The defeat highlights how fine margins often decide low-scoring IPL encounters, where fielding efficiency can be as crucial as batting or bowling. For Mumbai Indians, the match serves as a reminder of the importance of coordination in the deep and maintaining composure in pressure situations, particularly when defending below-par totals.
