IPL 2026: KKR Star’s Concussion Substitution Against Mumbai Indians Raises Eyebrows
KKR’s concussion substitute decision during the MI match triggered widespread debate.
Kolkata Knight Riders found themselves at the centre of a fresh controversy during their IPL 2026 clash against Mumbai Indians after a concussion substitution involving batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi triggered questions from fans and observers. The incident occurred during the 11th over of Mumbai Indians’ innings at Eden Gardens when Tilak Varma top-edged a delivery from spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. Raghuvanshi and Chakaravarthy both ran towards the catch and collided awkwardly while attempting to take it, allowing the batter a reprieve.
Raghuvanshi appeared to injure his hand during the collision and walked off the field shortly afterwards. KKR initially announced through social media that Ramandeep Singh would replace Raghuvanshi, but the post was later deleted. Eventually, Tejasvi Singh came out to bat during Kolkata’s chase and scored 12 runs off 13 deliveries as KKR successfully chased down 148 with seven balls remaining to keep their playoff hopes alive.
However, the decision to allow a concussion substitute quickly became a talking point because the visible injury appeared related to Raghuvanshi’s hand rather than a head impact. Under IPL playing conditions, concussion replacements are permitted only when a player suffers a concussion or concussion-related symptoms during a match. The situation led to criticism and confusion online, with many questioning whether the substitution complied with tournament regulations.

Reports suggest Raghuvanshi could miss KKR’s final league-stage match against Delhi Capitals because players diagnosed with concussion are required to observe a mandatory seven-day recovery period before returning to action. The development would be a major setback for Kolkata given the batter’s strong performances this season.
Raghuvanshi has emerged as one of KKR’s most dependable middle-order batters in IPL 2026, scoring 422 runs in 12 innings at an average of 42.20 and a strike rate of 146.52. The 22-year-old has registered five half-centuries, including three in his last four innings. With Kolkata still needing a victory over Delhi Capitals and favourable results elsewhere to qualify for the playoffs, concerns over his availability have added further pressure ahead of the crucial encounter.
