KL Rahul Picks up Orange Cap, Sends Fiery "Strike Rate" Message to Ajit Agarkar After Years of T20 Snub
KL Rahul leads IPL 2026 scoring with a 54-run average and 180+ strike rate, signalling readiness for T20I recall.
KL Rahul strengthened his case for a return to India’s T20 side after climbing to the top of the IPL 2026 run charts and claiming the Orange Cap following Delhi Capitals’ latest victory. Rahul, who last played a T20 International for India in 2022, has been out of the national setup amid long-standing concerns over strike rate. His current season, however, has delivered a strong response.
The wicketkeeper-batter has emerged as one of the standout performers of the tournament, combining consistency with aggressive scoring. Rahul is averaging 54 this season while maintaining a strike rate above 180, numbers that place him among the most effective batters in the competition. His form has been central to Delhi Capitals’ campaign and has reignited debate around his international future.
After being named Player of the Match, Rahul appeared visibly pleased while receiving the Orange Cap at the presentation ceremony. Speaking afterward, he said runs and records are satisfying, but victories remain the most important outcome. He added that scoring heavily means more when it contributes directly to the team’s success.

Rahul also addressed Delhi Capitals’ dressing-room environment after a mixed run of results. He said the squad remained balanced despite setbacks and that honest conversations had taken place internally. According to Rahul, the team recognised it had often been competitive in matches but failed to seize key moments, something they are now trying to correct.
When asked what part of his game pleased him most this season, Rahul gave a direct answer: his strike rate. He acknowledged that scoring speed had been a major talking point for several years and said it was an area he had worked hard to improve. Rahul added that adapting to the demands of modern T20 cricket was important both for himself and the team.
His comments are likely to be seen as a message to critics and selectors, including chairman Ajit Agarkar. With India continuing to evolve its T20 side, Rahul’s improved tempo and strong numbers could place him back into selection discussions. If he maintains this form through the remainder of IPL 2026, calls for his return are expected to grow louder.
